Mr. Sperr's Bio

Mr. Sperr began teaching in Brevard County in 2007 at Southwest Middle School.  Along with developing their general music curriculum, he also instructed both jazz and concert bands as associate director.  In his three years at Southwest, the jazz program grew from 19 students to 50 populating two regularly scheduled bands, which regularly booked 12-15 school, community and adjudicated performances during the year including district Music Performance Assessments and the Lakeside Jazz Festivals where they received excellent and superior level ratings.  After moving to KMS in 2010, Mr. Sperr became director of vocal music where his advanced women and mixed ensembles received superior ratings at district MPA; and, while associate director of orchestra, his ensemble became one of the only designated middle school symphony orchestras to perform at district MPA where they also received a superior rating.  

 

He holds a BM degree in bassoon performance and an MM degree in music theory from the University of South Florida and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in music theory and history from the University of Connecticut.  His forthcoming dissertation deals with attributes of pitch space distances and how they relate to formal configuations of tension in post-tonal music.  He has presented his research through academic papers delivered at symposiums both in the United States and Europe.  As a graduate assistant and adjunct professor, Mr. Sperr instructed all levels of undergrauate music theory at USF and UConn from 2001-2007 and is currently an adjunct professor at Columbia College in Orlando and Patrick AFB.

 

As a private instructor, Mr. Sperr maintains a bassoon studio of 12-15 students of all ages.  His students regularly make all-state and all-county festivals and receive superior ratings on their solo performances at both district and state levels.  In addition, he boasts a 100% student graduation rate into various university schools of music with all receiving scholarships.

 

Mr. Sperr is married to his wife, Marcey, who is the strings consultant for the Titusville High School feeder chain and a cellist with her own 10-12 student private studio.  They have two young children, Aiden and Ava and are active members of their church, Redeemer Presbyterian in Titusville.  Mr. Sperr enjoys all sports known to man and also takes pride in beating middle schoolers at baseball/kickball, football, and of course, basketball!
